A magnifi cent clifftop home in Ruby Bay, built by Nelson company Headstart Developments Ltd, won national awards for the Pink Batts Ultra Energy Efficiency Award and Heart of the Home Kitchen Award at the Registered Master Builders 2005 House of the Year, in association with PlaceMakers.

Facing north with stunning views of the Abel Tasman’s luminous white beaches by day and Nelson’s city lights by night, this classic home is understated in appearance but once the front door opens this image is quickly reversed.

The home is a unique mix of contemporary meets classic. Throughout the interior chocolate brown granite with wild blue opal inserts has been used extensively with silky oak joinery and fl oor to ceiling glazing. Suspended cylinders and scalloped wings float over the kitchen, living and lounge area.

At night this home becomes theatrical, with sound, vision and lighting to rival the best. Much of it is controlled electronically, and is managed remotely using small soft touch portable screens accessing security, lighting, sound and vision. Judges were not short in their praise for the home’s insulation and well designed kitchen.

“This stunning open plan home has used insulation creatively at every opportunity so noise is not a problem. The builder has also excelled in making the state-of-the-art kitchen a defining feature by creating a hub of warmth and activity,” they said. Headstart Developments Ltd director Paul Richards says working on the home was a privilege.

“It is not often that you get to work on such an imaginative project. The client was continually pushing the boundaries and there was a lot of technical work involved to bring this home to completion.”

Headstart Developments Ltd won national awards with this entry for the Pink Batts Ultra Energy Efficiency Award and Heart of the Home Kitchen Award at the Registered Master Builders 2005 House of the Year, in association with PlaceMakers.

Mr Richards believes quality results are achieved when everyone involved in the project understands and is committed to a quality outcome. “It shows respect for your client and your workmanship.”
