Innovative scaffolding system Intaks has won Best Design Initiative at the recent 2014 New Zealand Workplace Health & Safety Awards.

The 10th annual awards, organised by Safeguard magazine and supported by ACC and WorkSafe New Zealand, recognise the people and organisations demonstrating excellence and achievement in workplace health and safety.

Intaks was awarded Best Design Initiative honours for their innovative, dual-purpose work platform and roof edge protection system — an exceptionally lightweight scaffolding that uses interlocked aluminium planks to provide a secure working platform and to reduce manual handling injuries in set-up and dismantling.

Being 80% lighter than steel, Intaks also takes significantly less time, truck tonnage and manpower to install.

Intaks achieves very wide spans, and can be installed with no footprint, so ground space and lower walls stay clear. Multiple trades can work on site together with unrestricted access. And with more than 15 different configurations, the system adapts to virtually any job or terrain.

The design also offers permanent brackets in buildings for easy reinstallation, which can be especially applicable to buildings such as schools, retirement villages and commercial premises where future maintenance plans are in place.

Intaks designer, scaffolding industry veteran Lew Cleveland, says with the new Health and Safety at Work Act coming into effect in 2015, the company feels confident that Intaks’ dynamic design is ready to meet the demands of what will be a significantly altered health and safety landscape.

The fully certified and patented Intaks system is now being used on commercial and residential sites around the country, delivering not only workplace health and safety benefits, but significant time and cost savings to building and roofing companies, subcontractors and building owners.
